Great question.
Frankly, people, including the experts, just didn’t know any better.
If you have something good (which exercise is) it just seems logical that doing more of it is even better.
But the fact is, hours of cardio each week, and even traditional strength training, will only get you so far.
If you bake a pizza at 200 degrees, after a long time it’ll be done. But it won’t look as good, and may not even taste as good as it would have if you had baked it at 400 or 450.
At the higher temperatures your pizza could be done in 8 to 12 minutes (if not frozen) In that time the crust will become golden, the cheese will melt and brown, and the flavors will be superb.
At 200 degrees, the crust will probably never brown, and instead turn tough and chewy. The cheese will look like you left it on your dashboard on a hot summer day. and the flavor… after baking for such a long time, there probably won’t be much flavor to speak of.
Now, I probably shouldn’t be talking about pizza to people who want to lose weight (me included.)
But it’s a good analogy.
If you work out a little bit for a long time (like an hour of treadmill walking) you’ll get exercise.
You’ll even get into better shape.
But you won’t get into as good of shape as someone who uses resistance training to fatigue for short bursts of time (I’m oversimplifying, but you get the idea.)
Sometimes shorter is better. And fifteen minutes of the RIGHT kind of exercising done the right way will do more to make you fit and lose weight than an hour or two of traditional boring cardio.
In fact, cutting your workout time and frequency in half or less will double your results and skyrocket your fat loss success!
